One tradition that is done in Spain is the “ Thirteen Coins “, known as the “ Madrina de Arras “. The madrina de arras holds 13 coins that the groom presents to the bride. The madrina de arras holds 13 coins that the groom presents to the bride. The coins or arras is an old Roman Custom of breaking gold or sliver, with half to be kept by the woman and the other half by the man, as a pledge of marriage. The coins are given to the bride by the groom showing that he will support her. These coins become part of the new couples family heirloom.

The groom gives the bride the coins as a symbol of his unquestionable trust and confidence. Acceptance by the bride means taking that trust and confidence unconditionally with total dedication.

Another tradition is that of the “ Lasso”. As part of the wedding ceremony to symbolize unity, a large loop of the rosary beads is placed in a figure eight shape around the neck of the bride and groom. The lasso is to show the union and protection of marriage. At the end of the marriage the lasso is removed, and given to the bride as a moment of her becoming the mistress of the groom’s heart and home and shows their promise to be together.

Most weddings use the Latin music of the Mariachi at the recessional. Traditional weddings prepare special weddings cookies that are small, round pastries made of almonds, flour and butter. Also a tradition is the groom’s cake, which is a gift from the bride to the groom.
